It’s 2019 and if you’re anything like us, you haven’t even started working on your new cosplays for the year! But that’s okay; we still have the whole year to ourselves to get it done.
In this post, The Cosplay Angel and I will discuss 2019 cosplay ideas and what we think will be popular at conventions this year. Of course, it’s always difficult to predict with certainty what people will be cosplaying as; memes always pop up out of the blue (e.g. Bowsette, Virgin Killer) and various series can end up being popular or end up being a bust (i.e. Tokyo Ghoul: RE, I’m looking at you).In any case, we’re taking a shot on what’s going to be popular in 2019. Let’s find out!
1. KINGDOM HEARTS
We’ve all waited YEARS for Kingdom Hearts III to finally come out. Believe me when I say, there’s a ton of KH fans out there. When this game is released this month and everyone starts playing it, you can bet you’re going to see a lot of Kingdom Hearts cosplays in 2019. We’ll definitely see the classic cosplays like Sora and Kairi. But with new characters coming out in the long-awaited sequel, we’re going to see a bunch of new cosplays from the series. And I personally am looking forward to it because we love Kingdom Hearts!
Cosplay ideas for Kingdom Hearts
There’s a whole cast of characters you can cosplay from Kingdom Hearts, since this video game series has been around for a while (despite waiting so long for KH3). If you want to keep things Simple and Clean (pun intended), you can always go for Kairi’s original outfit or an Organization XXIII trench coat hoodie. Sora and Riku are always popular choices as well. Aqua is a cute and popular character to cosplay as well.
Many Kingdom Hearts characters carry unique weapons (e.g. Sora and the Keyblade). So if you decide to make that part of your cosplay, you’ll definitely stand out. For example, Axel was always a great character to cosplay with his flamboyant red hair and chakrams as weapons! They’re not easy to design or make, but you can always commission if it’s out of your skill levelYou can also wait until Kingdom Hearts III is released. We don’t know yet the entire plot or any of the new characters. So we’ll have to wait and see if any of them are worth cosplaying. Fortunately this game is coming out very soon, so we have lots of time to prepare for a cosplay of a new character before the big summer conventions take place.
NOTE: I posted on my Facebook asking for Kingdom Hearts cosplay photos. I got such an overwhelming response; I had to turn some of them, even though they were all good. That alone should tell you how huge Kingdom Hearts will be in 2019!
2. SUPER SMASH BROS.
Everyone loves Nintendo and one of their most popular video franchises, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, just came out in December. The hype surrounding the game was huge and gamers came out to buy a Switch in order to play it. But what’s keeping this game popular, besides the competitive gaming scene? The downloadable characters that will be available in the future. Joker from Persona was revealed as one of them. There are 4 more to go, and the speculation will keep the Smash hype going for a while.
Cosplay Ideas for Super Smash Bros.
You can bet you’ll see a bunch of Mario, Zero Suit Samus and Bayonetta cosplayers in 2019. If you’re looking for easy cosplays to do, characters like Ness, Lucas, Pokémon Trainer and the Wii Fit Trainer are the easiest ones to pull off. If you’re looking for something more challenging, go for the fancier-looking characters like Palutena or any of the Fire Emblem characters. Some characters have new, original designs in Smash Ultimate. And there’s also new characters such as Dark Pit, Dark Samus and Simon Belmont. So you have a lot of options for a Smash cosplay – there’s over 75 characters in the game to choose from!
Persona is insanely hot for the past year or so, and we feel like it’s only going to carry over in 2019. Not only is Atlus releasing more games related to the series, but Nintendo just announced that Joker will be a downloadable character in Smash Ultimate! Maybe they’ll release Persona 5 on the Switch. So Persona ain’t going away for a long time, and that’s not a bad thing.
Cosplay ideas for Persona
Where do we start? There are lots of Persona characters to cosplay: Joker, Ann, Futaba, Haru, Ohya, Ryuji, and so many many more. What’s nice is that a lot of the characters have simple costume designs. And that’s just from Persona 5. You can always cosplay from the previous games.
If Joker gets a new design in Smash, then that’s a cosplay idea you can take. There’s also a couple of new Persona games coming out in 2019, one of them being Persona 5 R. Although we don’t know what the game actually is, there could be some potential for new character skins and ultimately new cosplay ideas from the series.
This is one of the most popular multiplayer games out there. Why? Because the game is easy to learn (although difficult to master), the characters are interesting and the competitive eSports scene keeps this game relevant.
Cosplay ideas for Overwatch
There are lots of cool-looking characters and unless you’ve been hiding under a rock, you’ve already seen a bunch of them at various conventions. If you’re looking for someone easy to do, D.va and Soldier 76 are good choices. If you want to cosplay someone more challenging, then try characters like Mercy and Lucio. With Blizzard releasing more skins and updates, we feel Overwatch will continue to populate the convention landscape in 2019. I’m sure we’ll be seeing Black Cat D.va fairly soon!
5. LOVE LIVE!
This series has been around for so long…and it’s going to stay on top for a very long time. Who doesn’t love idol groups? Everyone seems to be starting or continuing idol groups based on Love Live! (e.g. 1,2 Shine). And unless a new series comes out that’s just as good as Love Live! it’s going to stick around for years to come.
Cosplay ideas for Love Live!
You don’t need any cosplay ideas for Love Live! because there are so many outfits and variations for every character and they’ll always be adored by many. Fortunately, Love Live! cosplays tend to be on the cheaper side. You can buy the basic outfit for dirt cheap under $30 USD. However, some of the dresses (e.g. Arabian dancer) will be more expensive. My friend told me her outfit back $120. So while you might pay more for some Love Live! costumes, all of them are still in the low and middle-end of cosplay pricing.
Note that you’ll stand out even more if you have a group to cosplay Love Live! together with. A new OVA was just released in January, so there might be some new costume ideas for you. Nico Nico Nii!
6. MY HERO ACADEMIA
All that might! The characters have wonderful designs and the Anime is highly acclaimed. It’s one of the top Shonen Anime right now. On top of that, a new season was announced that will be released later this year. All these things will ensure that My Hero Academia will remain a popular series to cosplay for a long time.
Cosplay Ideas for My Hero Academia
The main characters like Deku, All Might, Ochaco and Katsuki are going to still be popular in 2019. It’s your typical superhero Anime. But despite having a ton of characters, they’re all unique in their own way with their “quirks.” And in terms of cosplay, every character is so cool-looking!
Fortunately since BNHA is such a popular series, online cosplay stores are mass-producing outfits of BNHA characters. So it’ll be relatively cheap to buy one off those sites. For example, a fully Deku jumpsuit cosplay on Aliexpress is only $100 USD! So you won’t be breaking your wallet to cosplay from BNHA (relatively speaking).
7. THE AVENGERS
We’re all crazy about our Marvel superheroes. The Avengers: Infinity War was one of the biggest films of 2018. And this was noticeable with all of the Marvel/Avengers cosplays at various conventions last year, especially at comic-cons. With another Avengers movie coming out in 2019, you’ll still be seeing a lot of Marvel cosplays. And that’s okay, because they’re all awesome.
Cosplay Ideas for the Avengers
The Avengers is basically a huge collaboration of Marvel cosplayers so you’ll have lots to choose from, including Iron Man, Spiderman, Black Widow and Captain America. Keep in mind however that Marvel characters tend to be more expensive to buy or produce because of the character designs. For example, Iron Man is basically a power suit, so if you decide to go fully detailed with his costume, you could be spending thousands of dollars! Of course, you can always do more simple characters like Spiderman and Black Widow as well.
8. SWORD ART ONLINE
Considered by some as the “McDonald’s” of Anime, you either really hate or really love SAO. But there’s no denying that it’s a popular series. With a new season already started in 2018 and continuing this year, there’s no doubt that SAO cosplays will stay popular.
Cosplay Ideas for Sword Art Online
There are still a lot of Sword Art cosplayers at conventions. Characters like Asuna and Sinon are still popping up at conventions. With the Alicization arc currently airing, there should be more SAO cosplayers out there. For better or worse! If you love Sword Art, then that’s great news. If you don’t, then… that’s a shame.
What a weird name for a series. But this one is produced by Studio Trigger, the same studio that brought you Kill La Kill and Darling in the Franxxx. SSSS.Gridman is like Evangelion x Darling, so expect a lot of fans to be into this series. In particular, there’s a small meme going around with Rikka – one of the characters – and her super thighs! She’s a pretty cute character, so we believe she is going to be a popular character to cosplay in 2019.
Cosplay Ideas for SSSS.Gridman
There’s only one cosplay from SSSS.Gridman that will be popular – Rikka and her thighs! Maybe Gridman if you can afford the armour.
10. THE RISING OF THE SHIELD HERO
It’s only January 2019 and this Anime series is already getting a lot of hype. While Shield Hero has an interesting story and characters to begin with, the series has brought controversy by bringing up taboo and sensitive subjects like false rape accusation and child slavery. In any case, it’s one of the most popular Anime at the time of this writing. Usually when an Anime gets this hot, you can bet you’ll see some cosplays from that series. And looking at the characters, there’s a lot of great cosplays you can do from Shield Hero.
Cosplay Ideas for The Rising of the Shield Hero
You can already buy Shield Hero cosplays online! There are costumes for the main characters Naofumi and Raphtalia. Their costume design is pretty similar to Fire Emblem cosplays; can be cheap if you use more clothing-based materials, but can be more expensive if you decide to add armour. The series is just getting started, so we should see some more interesting characters as the season progresses, and hopefully more cosplay ideas!
There you have it. These are our picks to be the most popular cosplays for 2019. The year has just started, so we will find out and see. At the end of the year, we will see if our predictions were correct or not.
